One of the most basic youth soccer drills is called one on one dribbling. If you can teach your child how to dribble well, he/she will be able to beat defender's one-on-one in a real match.
This drill is very easy, and only requires one other person for your child to complete the drill. It is best to find someone that is his/her equal, but if that is not possible, you might have to play a little bit of soccer too!
Unlike the basketball form of dribbling, to dribble in soccer, you use your feet. Dribbling is nothing more than kicking the ball to yourself, from one foot, to the other. It is used to keep the defender on his/her heels, while giving you the opportunity to pass them.
To satisfy your child's competitive nature, I would recommend setting up a point system. If you are practicing with them, give them a point for every time they get past you. If they have a friend to practice with, have them take turns trying to pass each other, rewarding points for when they succeed.
Please, do not think that just because this is a basic drill, that it isn't important. Dribbling is the building blocks for any good soccer player, and without the skill, they will not do too good on the field. Every time they bring the soccer ball out to the yard, offer to dribble with them! I know that it will get old sooner or later, but do what you can do to keep them motivated!
